"The Railroad Buck"
Photo provided by: John Smith

John writes, "My cousin Aaron and I hiked about 7 miles in on a Union-Pacific access road to the small patch of state land. Just as the sun was barely starting to come up, he glassed this 4 point muley bedded down on the opposite side of the canyon. Lucky for me, he had already shot one bigger, and moved on to look for his trophy while I snuck around the other side of the ridge we were on.

I spent about an hour trying to avoid a silhouette and creep quietly up to a vantage where I might have a shot. I crested the ridge on my face and looked through the scope across the canyon at the still bedded buck. He was about 200-250 yards away. Luckily, my dad had taught me to always sight in at 300, so I pulled him directly into my crosshairs and layed a shot into his right shoulder.

Of course, now the fun part was over. I then had to bone him out and pack him those 7 miles back to my car. So worth it!"
