"Jared's Backcountry Muley"
Photo provided by: Jared Bloomgren

Jared "J-Rod" Bloomgren writes, "I just returned from my Wyoming Do-It-Yourself Backcountry Mule Deer hunt and had the time of my life! My entire camp was packed in on foot numerous miles to a location near 10,000 feet. On the 8th day on the mountain I was able to put an arrow through this buck as he tried to slip back to his feeding area. I had watched this buck for the previous 4 days and decided to make the two day move to try to put a stalk on him. Spotting and stalking in the high country is not as forgiving as I once thought it would be! The 25 yard shot had this buck down in short order. In the steep terrain, he rolled over 100 more yards and messed up his velvet, but luckily didn't break any of his antlers up! He was an extremely old buck that once may have scored over the 200" mark. With his lack of front forks he was still able to surpass 180"!

It was by far, one of the hardest hunts I have ever experienced! Oh yes, I will be returning to the backcountry in the future!"
