Cole Davis writes, "This was my first year hunting mule deer with a muzzleloader. I got this one about 30 minutes after daylight on the second morning of the season, September 14th, 2014. My buddy and I came to the edge of a sloped meadow and saw a few deer and a smaller 3 x 3 buck. As we moved for a better view I saw this nice 4 x 4 towards the back of the herd. I tried to put a stalk on them at 265 yards, but could only get about 50 yards closer. I repositioned and moved a little down wind and stood by a pine tree with my gun on a shooting stick. Something spooked them down hill right in front of me, around 50 yards away.
There were about a dozen deer with about 5 legal bucks. As I had a stare off with a doe, she stood in front of "the big boy" blocking my shot. He finally took a few steps forward, I could only see from his neck up as the tall meadow grass covered up his vitals. I knew this was my only chance at a shot so I took my best guess and down he went! I’m very grateful and blessed for this opportunity!"
