"Jenny's 350+ Utah Bull"
Photo provided by: Jenny Capson

Jenny Capson writes, "Every year, for 22 years, I’ve hunted with my husband. Archery deer hunt, rifle deer, pheasant, elk….we love them all. Being in the mountains, whether or not I’m successful, is fantastic! I always do well though…except on the rifle elk hunt. So far, I’ve had to be satisfied with watching others in our party bag their elk, that minor satisfaction diminishing, but never quite banishing my disappointment.

For years, I’ve put in for the CWMU tag on the Johnson Mountain Ranch (Utah), hoping to bag one of the only public tags available. Each year my husband assures me, this time, I’ll draw out. In 2005, it finally happened!

What an awesome experience to hunt such beautiful country, and to see no other hunters. Usually I’m lucky to see a bull with a herd. Not so that year. Trophy bulls were so abundant my husband threatened to hold onto my bullets to ensure that I didn’t shoot a “small” one.

We started on a Friday evening and hunted all day Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning. I had plenty of shots at nice bulls, but this was my once-in-a-lifetime elk hunt. I wanted to make the most of it.
To sit among a herd of elk, without being spotted, while bulls bugled and battled around us, was unbelievable. Still, not being able to get a perfect shot because of all the trees, left me frustrated. Almost as frustrated as my husband was to have a clear shot and not be able to shoot because this was my hunt!

On the second weekend, we managed to call a small, five-point, raghorn bull to within fifteen yards of us, totally unaware we were there. Reluctant to give up the fun, we played with him for about thirty minutes while daylight waned.

That weekend I shot my elk. It was Sunday morning at first light. One gorgeous shot at 200 yards. He ran about twenty yards before falling among the trees. How awesome to walk up to this incredible animal, with my husband and son, and know it was me who bagged him. Finally!!!"

Jenny's 6x7 bull gross scores 351!!
