"Paul's Utah Smokepole Bull"
Photo provided by: Paul Fallon
Paul Fallon, aka BearBait, took this big bull with his smokepole while hunting a limited entry unit in southern Utah.
Paul writes, "I found this bull the day before the opening of my Southern Utah limited entry muzzleloader hunt. When I was watching him, he was complete and running his cows. I couldn't find him the next (opening) morning, so I returned to the area early that afternoon, shortly after arriving in the area I saw the bull coming into a waterhole. After watching him get closer I saw that he had broken the main beam just behind the G4 split on the right side. I quickly decided that broken or not he was a monster. He came in at 60 yards, drank and stepped broadside, that's when I touched off 150 grains of 777 powder and a 340 gr. "Dead Center" bullet. I'm happy to report that he dropped in his tracks.
I took him to Jay Ogden to have him caped and scored (every time I scored him, it scared the he_ _ out of me). Jay was just like me when we tallied the score.
The side he broke is the strongest side so we took the measurements from the weak side and added them in for the missing stuff on the strong side. With those measurements he would grossed 406 4/8 and nettd 401!
I know he is broken and will never be measured, but he is a trophy of a life-time and I couldn't be happier. Just imagine though, if only I could have hunted him 24 hours earlier....The Utah State record ML would have been shattered....And Utah would have produced one of the biggest typicals ever taken with a muzzleloader!"
