"Nice California Buck for Martin"
Photo provided by: Martin Fenn

Martin Fenn, aka FIREHAWK, writes, "This was my first 4x4 muley. I shot my first buck, a 3x3 muley, that was about 20 lbs. lighter than this fella. I hunt in southern California Zone D-17 in the Mojave National Preserve. I took him 10-11-09, day 2 of rifle season w/ my handloaded Rem. 700 30-06. I had seen a nice buck in the same sage covered wash 2 years earlier. I hunted from the same point as before and the wind was in my favor. The sun was hot, but sometimes you can't have both. I was glassing and seen this buck standing under a juniper tree at 100 yards. I reached for my rifle and of course drug it across the rock it was leaning on because I didn't want to take my eyes off of this deer. The buck instantly pinpointed my location with the sound. (Busted), I slowly brought the rifle to bear at 4x power, but the deer still looked far and the sun was bleeding into my scope bad. I took the scope up to 6-8x power and felt rushed because I just knew we were not far from seeing his tail lights. I hurried the shot a little, but it hit him diagonally through his boiler room and didn't damage the shoulder or hind quarters. He took a step, reared up and thrashed to the ground. No more shots required. Everyone at camp was pretty stoked."
