15 year old, Derek Barnes sent us this photo of his first buck.
Derek writes, "I had been anticipating the results for the draw this year as I had three preference points and this would be my first opportunity to go deer hunting in Colorado. My father shot a 28-inch wide 5x5 buck last year and I had been anticipating this hunt all year.
When the letter came in the mail I was very excited when I opened it and found out I was successful in the draw and would be hunting for my first buck.
Due to some circumstances I was not able to get out and hunt opening weekend. I felt okay about it as my dad and I had scouted the area out very good and we knew where the bigger bucks had been hanging out.
The night before we were going to head out, it started to snow. This made me even more excited and I couldn’t get much sleep. I could vision in my mind white covered hillsides and big deer tracks in the snow. We got up early the next morning and headed out.
We came upon some deer early and watched them for awhile. There was a nice 4 point with them, but my dad said to wait, that there were bigger ones out there.
We hiked what seemed to be miles and spotted some more. As we got closer, there was another nice 4 point, but again I decided to wait.
The anticipation was building as here I was hunting deer for the first time and I really wanted a buck, and I was just watching them!
A little later we spotted a nice buck in the distance and as we made our way up the hill and got to the top there were several together and to my surprise not one nice 4 point, but three.
We sized up the three bucks and then my dad said, "Yes, the one right there is the one". I was so excited it was great, I got ready and when the time was right, I shot.
I could hardly believe my eyes as we walked up to him and I saw "My First Buck". He is a nice 4x4 and 26 inches wide. I will always remember this hunt with my dad all my life, thanks to him and my mom for all their support."
