Early Utah Muzzleloader Hunt

(Sept. 1999)

This year Utah's Muzzleloader hunt will begin in late September. There are probably many hunters that just aren't that excited about this new season. Traditionally the Muzzleloader hunt has opened in early November. Often times this meant hunting in the cold weather and snow, especially at higher elevations. Many hunters would be hoping that the bucks would start trailing the doe's in anticipation of the rut. With most mule deer, the doe's start coming into season in November. Hunters were offered the chance that a giant buck might just slip up during this rutting season. I fully support the action taken by the DWR to move the hunt into September. By doing that it should remove a lot of pressure from those big bucks, and give them a better chance of making it through the winter. This new season will offer the Muzzleloader hunters the opportunity to hunt these animals before they get ran all over the mountain. This gives all of us Muzzleloader hunters the chance to be more deliberate towards hunting. It will now be possible to spot a buck while scouting and maybe see him during the hunt. In the past, scouting for the Muzzleloader hunt was near impossible because of all the pressure the deer received during the rifle elk and deer hunts. I'm excited, even got a new gun. I can't shoot very well, but I'm working on it. Well, good luck hunters, maybe I'll see you in the hills.
