"Dandy Velvet-Covered Muzzleloader Buck for Shawn"
Photo provided by: Shawn Witkowski

Shawn Witkowski writes, "The hunt occurred in Unit 2. I had spent 6 days glassing as much of the country as I could before the season started. I had a couple of wash out days as the weather was pretty wet. This hurt my game camera scouting as the deer could find enough water in puddles and didn't have to hit the ponds. I had spotted this deer the first day and saw him a couple more times before the opener. He was the only deer that was still in velvet out of all the bucks I glassed. On opening morning I wasn't specifically looking for him, but knew that if I saw him I would make an attempt to harvest him. I spotted him coming across a very open sage flat with some other bucks. By the 14th they were really getting pushy with each other and I knew it wouldn't be long before they split up and relocated. I watched him bed under an pinyon - juniper and put the plan in place. At 36 yards he stood up in his bed, of course blocked by sage brush. He ran out and around the tree and I side stepped to clear the tree and stopped him with my voice. Now at 50 yards, I settled the front site of my T/C Hawken .50 on his heart and touched it off. He was above me and as soon as the 300gr Powerbelt Platinum hit home I knew it was good. He went about another 50 yards before expiring."
